Loss of Larger Fish (September 2b)
Where have all the big fish gone? Many countries prohibit the catching of undersized fish, allowing only the big ones to be taken; this is thought to allow the little fish to grow. Researchers have found, however, that over-harvesting larger fish leads to a population of smaller fish. In their experiments, it was found that within just a few generations, the genetic make-up of harvested fish has caused them to be smaller AND less fertile. This could explain what has been observed in a number of commercial fishing grounds, like the “crash” of the cod fishery off Newfoundland in the early 1990s. What is happening? The genetic information that codes for larger size and higher fertility has been culled out and lost from the fish population. The loss of larger fish has been a result of human-imposed selection on the fish. Evolutionists would have us believe that new information can be added to the genetic code and that the larger fish population will recover. But that is not what we are observing in the real world’s science!
